Definite and Bare Kind-denoting Noun Phrases

چکیده

To express the same meaning, Romance languages (here and elsewhere, I exemplify with Italian), standardly use noun phrases with a definite article: the plural definite with count nouns and the singular definite with mass nouns (sing. il/la/lo/l’, plur. i/gli/le) (2). A singular definite article with count nouns is also possible (3), with the same restrictions as in English (see e.g. Lawler 1973, Carlson 1977:432).

Dag Haug: med - the syntax and semantics of concomitance in Norwegian

The paper discusses the syntax and semantics of the Norwegian preposition med, which denotes a variety of concomitance relations. The c-structural, f-structural and semantic properties of the preposition are examined. Determiner selection in noun phrase production.

In 3 experiments, native speakers of German named pictures of 1 or 2 objects by producing singular or plural noun phrases consisting of a definite gender-marked determiner and a noun. When singular and plural determiners differed (masculine and neuter gender), naming latencies were longer for plural utterances than for singular utterances. By contrast, when singular and plural determiners were ...

Definite and bare noun contrasts in child Catalan

Thirty-three children aged 3–5 were tested for comprehension of definite and bare noun (BN) contrasts in Catalan, a language with bare nouns in direct object but not in subject position. Catalan objects have the same semantics as in English subjects: BNs map to generic and definites into specific referents. Global semantic parameters cannot explain the contrast in this type of language. The tes...
